Kyle, I love you and will reserve our bromance for off-line communication so as not to upset your wife. :-)

Brandi,
in a former life, I skipped out on [Katy High] school and would drive into West University to play chess with the Rice University students at Cafe' Brasil. Invariably, I would run into Tim--a crusty, old, carpenter-hippie dude from a bygone era full of beatnik prose and meandering thoughts. He was a good chess player. Regardless of the gambit I played, Tim exclusively opened with the Caro-Kann gambit for black. As we headed into the mid-game, even after he had forfeited valuable pieces for position, he would whisper "The fool persisting in his foolishness shall inevitably inherit wisdom," just before wiping the floor with me. He'd then light a cigarette and ask me if I wanted to see an installation he was working on with a wink and a smile. (I think Tim's cryptic utterance is a Chinese proverb, if not of Asian origin.)

And the point?

The dedication is personal, but it is certainly not an attack, nor a judgment. I've never told you why I am motivated to support you and I certainly will not now; but what I will say is that as you step into your own power as an entrepreneur, activist and community leader, the ratio of failure to [what others will label success] is at least 10/1. And that's okay. Certainly "fool" has a negative connotation, but no one ever excused you of being simple. Look past the connotation to the deeper context.

When I revisited the story of Penzias and Wilson, you almost immediately came to mind. Consider:

What you're doing is iterative. Your selected field/study/focus is a new and blossoming category/industry. It is born from a passion to serve a larger interest. You're learning every day. You're asking some very big questions. You're touching every sector of the community.

Keep going. You will get there, wherever that "there" may be. And I can and will support that.

Jason, I'm honored by your dedication. Until I got to the line "Keep failing. Just fail faster. The fool persisting in his foolishness shall inevitably inherit wisdom,” I wasn't sure what the connection was to me. I'm sure feeling like a fool these days but wisdom is creeping in from different angles. I'm also opening up new realms of possibility as I get clearer about what I truly want to be doing with MY time versus what things I want to help manifest in this lifetime, in this universe. I've got a new dose of moral outrage providing me some new motivation around sustainability planning. Dreaming up a role as a green activist reporter. I'll keep you posted. It will no doubt be an interesting 52 weeks ahead.
